Weekly TD-SCDMA Update July 7-13
July 11, 2008
- Chinese TD Tech, a joint venture between Siemens and Huawei for TD-SCDMA technology development, announced on July 9 that it has successfully lab-tested TD-HSDPA (Time Division High Speed Uplink Packet Access), also known as the 3.75G technology, whereby enabling telecom operators to deliver a maximum uplink speed of 2.2Mbps, Sohu News reported.

- China Mobile plans to purchase around 40,000 TD-SCDMA mobile phones that support China's homegrown CMMB (China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting) mobile TV standard, China Business News reported. Several telecommunications equipment providers, including ZTE and Qualcomm, are preparing to supply such models to China Telecom. This batch of CMMB-enabled TD-SCDMA mobile phones will be provided to a limited number of users during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in August.

At the same time, China Mobile is also pushing another mobile TV standard, TD-MSMS (TD-Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service). Presently, the progress of TD-MSMS development is slightly lagging behind that of CMMB, though. According to China Business News, China's SARFT (State Administration of Radio, Film and Television) plans to launch CMMB services in 37 Chinese cities before the Olympics Games. To date, over 30 cities in China have deployed the CMMB network.
